Indian opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of achieving a significant milestone, needing just 97 runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The prodigious left-hander has the opportunity to eclipse Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, commencing on July 2nd.

Jaiswal's consistent performance has been a bright spot for India amidst a challenging transitional period in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley showcased his exceptional talent, although it wasn't enough to prevent India from succumbing to a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting a formidable 371-run target for England, India was stunned by the composed chase led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, giving England a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a key source of optimism for India as they seek to level the series at Edgbaston. In just 20 Test matches, he has amassed 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who reached the mark in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer in history to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow on the list, having reached 2,000 runs in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has the chance to join and even surpass these legends, providing India with a crucial boost in a must-win Test match.
