In a stunning display of power hitting, Shimron Hetmyer propelled the Seattle Orcas to a thrilling victory over MI New York in the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. Hetmyer's last-ball six secured a dramatic three-wicket win, completing the highest successful run chase in MLC history.
Chasing a formidable target of 238, the Orcas looked in trouble before Hetmyer unleashed an explosive innings. His unbeaten 97 off just 40 balls, punctuated by 5 fours and 9 sixes, proved to be the difference.
Earlier in the match, MI New York had set a daunting target, posting 237/4. Nicholas Pooran led the charge with a blistering, unbeaten 108 off 60 deliveries. He was well-supported by Tajinder Dhillon, who smashed a quickfire 95 off just 35 balls.
Despite the onslaught, the Orcas bowlers managed to claw back some control. Gerald Coetzee and Kyle Mayers each took two wickets, helping to slow down the scoring rate.
Seattle's chase began poorly, with early wickets falling inside the powerplay. However, Mayers (37 off 20) and captain Sikandar Raza (30 off 9) launched a counter-attack, injecting momentum into the innings. Heinrich Klaasen also contributed with a rapid 26 off 13 balls.
Hetmyer then took center stage. With the required run rate escalating, he shifted gears, displaying incredible power and precision.
The game reached a climax on the final ball, with five runs needed for victory. Hetmyer faced MI New York captain Kieron Pollard. He expertly maneuvered the ball over fine leg for a game-winning six, sparking celebrations in the Orcas' camp.
Hetmyer, named Player of the Match, expressed his relief and satisfaction after the game. "This one is one of the best, because our backs were against the wall and I'm still grimacing over the last game where we couldn't cross the line," he said. He added that an earlier injury ironically helped him focus, as he "didn't want to run much."
